A successful test run and customer approval of the new surface treatment
The dialogue between NDI and Nowocoat about transitioning from Nowocoat’s traditional 2-component PU, heat-curing paint system to a moisture-curing Polyaspartic solution started in late 2022, prompted by the clear benefits for NDI.
The decision was made to carry out a test run which was scheduled over a weekend to minimise disruption to daily production operations. Nowocoat’s Chemical Engineer, Kirsten Jessen Terp, took part in the testing, working closely with the NDI team to fine-tune both products and equipment.
Following the successful test run, an approval process was initiated, with test rims being going through a thoroughly evaluation and approval process carried out by a number of NDI’s existing customers. The introduction of the new product at NDI’s production facility occurred as a seamless process, with the gradual replacement of various colours. NDI customers can now select from more than 60 different colours, all tailored by Nowocoat to meet customer-specific preferences and unique brand shades.
Significant reduction in VOC emissions and improved carbon footprint in rim production
Polyaspartic is an exceptionally durable and hard-wearing moisture-curing polyurethane product. It is particularly well-suited for metal surface treatment. By transitioning from traditional 2-component PU coatings to Polyaspartic, NDI has realised several advantages:
- One-coat solution
- High dry matter content
- Direct application to pre-treated metal
- Excellent coverage, gloss and hardness
- High color and UV resistance
- Reduction of VOCs by over 67%
- Elimination of oven and gas consumption, resulting in 100% savings
- Improved efficiency by streamlining the process with a one-coat solution
- Rims can be packed and shipped immediately upon leaving the production line.
Throughout the process, there has been a close dialogue between NDI’s production management team and Nowocoat’s technical staff. “The primary focus has been on efficiency and environmental impact, with valuable input from Nowocoat’s specialists”, says Henrik Voss, Production Assistant at NDI Group. He adds, “This has made a significant difference in our carbon footprint for rim production”.
The outcome is extremely promising.
Strengthening the ongoing commitment to flexibility and speed
NDI Group’s agricultural wheel exports have expanded significantly over the past two decades, now reaching more than 40 countries. A continual emphasis on high quality, production flexibility, and swift delivery times for finished rims are key objectives. Therefore, it is essential for NDI that their subcontractors ensure reliable delivery times and provide specialist support. Nowocoat’s Polyaspartic metal coating product aligns perfectly with NDI’s objective of delivering quality wheels swiftly to the extensive market they serve.
NDI, also known as Nordisk Dækimport, is a company that is always on the move.
